In the 1950s Birmingham University developed the Ferranti Mark I, one of the earliest computers in Britain. The General Electric Company (GEC) also established a manufacturing facility in Wolverhampton in the 1960s to manufacture mainframe computers.

Associated Television (ATV) became one of the first commercial television stations launched in Birmingham in 1956. More recently Pebble Mill was opened in Birmingham in 1976.In recent years the West Midlands has become a hub for digital media companies such as Red Shell Productions.
